COVID-19 pandemic has kept the cities locked down, but not the cyber criminals. The volume of attacks have increased significantly attacking businesses and healthcare organizations. Phishing, coronavirus themed malware, data breaches and more have risen in last two weeks. Worried about global cybersecurity, 400 experts from 40 different countries have come together to protect the cyber space. Experts from leading tech giants like Microsoft, Amazon and more have joined hands to fight the cyber criminals.
Marc Rogers, one of the top four manager of this new community said that the group’s primary objective is to combat against attacks on healthcare and medical agencies, and support other frontline responders to the pandemic. Additionally, the community is also focused in providing security to communication network and services, as these are critical during remote work situations. Considering that more people are working from home, securing the communication would keep the end users safe from hackers.
Rogers also cited that their community is recording huge volume of phishing attacks, in almost all the global languages that are orchestrated around the COVID-19 theme. He also mentioned that there are more than 4000 domains that have been registered in the pandemic’s name and out of which 70% of them are malicious intent. With so much phishing campaigns, hackers are looking for sensitive data like passwords, payment card details, patient data, information on the COVID-19 vaccines and more, only with proper cybersecurity policies and configurations these misfortunes can be avoided.
Roger is from the UK, two other managers are from America and Israel. At this point of time, the experts have nullified one such attack which exploited a vulnerability to spread a malware. Though he was not ready to disclose the details of their act now or in future, he also stated they are trying to make the world better by reducing unnecessary headaches, as we are already experiencing both physical and mental stress because of the coronavirus.
It appears that the experts are working in extreme cooperation and Roger is delighted with it. He also expects the community to grow and stay that way in the future too.
With draconian rise in COVID-19 themed cyberattacks, an initiative like this can bring a lot of hopes of businesses who are suffering from financial and economical challenges. Especially startups are facing difficult times as they aren’t used to remote work and need team’s presence for certain business discussion. The post-COVID-19 situation is going to be different, and businesses will be in need of different financial and operational strategies to survive the market. Cybersecurity professionals who’d love to make our world the better place, can join Rogers’s cyber community here and contribute for this fight against COVID-19 cyberattacks.
