A Pop TV station from Slovenia was hit by a Cyber Attack
Slovenia’s popular TV station ‘POP TV’ has fell victim to a cyber attack this week. The attack is believed to be an extortion attempt on the organization.
The attack happened on Tuesday impacting Pop TV’s network and restricted the company from displaying graphics for the evening edition of 24UR, the news show.
Pop TV station extortion attack and its effects
The night edition of the 24UR show was cancelled and a truncated version of the news aired on the Pop TV website, Pop TV said in their first statement on Tuesday.
However, the operations were restored to normal the next day. In their second statement on Wednesday, Pop TV mentioned that the attack also affected its web servers, including VOYO, the on-demand streaming platform.
The attack also restricted new content to be added to their platform and other channels which frustrated the subscribers as they are not able to view any of their paid services.
Since the Pop TV station spokesperson did not comment on the incident, however, another news channel from Slovenia called Zurnal24 mentioned that Pop TV was hit by an extortion attack by foreign hackers and seems like a ransomware attack.
The Slovenia’s Computer Emergency Response Team, SI-CERT mentioned the same as well and said that it is working with Pop TV to fix the issue, but denied sharing further details about the incident.
Cyberattacks targeting TV station
In last three years, several major TV stations have been hit by cyberattacks including Iran’s IRIB, Portugal’s SIC, Sinclair Broadcast Group and The Weather Channel.
Most of these attacks disrupted the IT infrastructure, causing broadcasting hurdles, and more. In case of Pop TV the operations were back to normal in a day thus escaping the major operational struggle easily.
