Bangkok Airways falls victim to LockBit Ransomware

Thailand’s major airline operator Bangkok Airways became victim to a cyberattack few weeks back and their passengers data has been compromised. The company has been attacked by LockBit ransomware operators and the gang has threatened to publish the data if the ransom isn’t paid on time.

It is to be noted that LockBit already had attacked Accenture recently demanding for $50 million in ransom for 6 TB of data.

Bangkok Airways cyberattack and details

LockBit had released a sample of around 200 GB of the Thai company’s data. Bangkok Airways had identified the attack on August 23 and are taking the necessary steps to handle the incident.

As per the Bangkok Airways press release, the actors didn’t hinder the Airlines routine operations but may have accessed the passengers data through the cyberattack. The personal data includes name, gender, email id, phone numbers, credit card details, home address and travel history.

Bangkok Airways have warned its customers to watch out for impersonation or fraud as their PII is now compromised.

Leveraging the Accenture hack

LockBit ransomware group’s hack on Accenture gave them enough details on Accenture’s client allowing them to do targeted take downs through that data. As per the hackers, they have compromised an airport that has Accenture software in its network.

LockBit has been in the industry since 2019 and it has affected around 70 organizations worldwide. These numbers are another proof that RaaS activities have grown immensely in recent times.
